Learning Updates

November is almost over!

Here is a brief update on our progress across the curriculum.

In Math we have been exploring strategies for solving word problems, using addition to solve subtraction number operations, and using number lines to solve addition and subtraction problems.  Next we are exploring the concept of perimeter as part of our measurement work.

In Science we are continuing to explore Rocks and Minerals by focussing our work on the following core understandings-

-The Rock Cycle
-Examples of the 3 types of rocks (Igneous, Metamorphic, Sedimentary)
-Explanation of how rocks break down through erosion with examples
-How to compare rocks
-Examples of how humans use rocks and minerals

We have learned that the Properties of Rocks can be described using the following indicators:
• colour
• lustre or “shininess”; e.g., shiny, dull, glassy, metallic, earthy
• texture; e.g., rough, smooth, uneven
• hardness
• streak
• crystal shape

In French we are learning the names of rooms in the home by making a floor plan for our houses.

In Social Studies we have been preparing for our trip to the Glenbow Museum next Monday by examining Alberta's past through the lens of an historian.  We looked at the concept of cause and effect by discussing the cause and effect of the introduction of horses to the plains in 1730 as well as the cause and effect of the drop in buffalo population with the influx of new settlers.

Our celebration of learning assembly will be taking place on Wednesday December 19th at 3pm.  We hope to see you there!

Word Problem Question

Today students will be bringing home a word problem to complete at home and return by Thursday.  Below is a problem solving rubric we use to determine how far along students are with their problem solving strategies and efficiency.

Beginner ------------------------------>       Advanced
Strategies

How do I interpret the problem and decide how I might solve it?
I need to work towards interpreting the problem and selecting an appropriate solving strategy. Step-by-step instruction helps me.
With much support, I can interpret the problem, select and follow through with an appropriate solving strategy.
I can interpret the problem, select and follow through with an appropriate solving strategy mostly on my own.
I can independently interpret the problem, select, and follow through on an appropriate solving strategy.
Reasoning

How do I prove my solution is correct with symbols, words or writing?
I need to work on ways to prove that my solution is correct. Much teacher support and examples help me.
I can explain the general ideas behind my thinking, with occasional support. I may have a few misconceptions.
I can independently prove my solution with correct math reasoning
I can reach a conclusion and justify or defend my solution
Computation

Are my calculations correct? Do I use efficient calculation strategies?
I need to check and correct my work. I either need to work on following procedures or selecting appropriate procedures.
I have some correct solutions. I need to continue to work towards following procedures correctly.
My computations are almost all correct, with only a few minor errors.
My calculations are essentially correct.
Communication

How do I explain my strategies and reasoning so that others can understand it, with symbols, words, or writing?
I need to work towards ways I can begin to communicate my thinking verbally or visually
I can communicate some general ideas about my thinking
I can use math language to communicate my thinking.
I can use highly detailed mathematical representations or language to communicate my thinking

Check out our letters to Mayor Nenshi on the bulletin board across from the office next time you are in the school!

Learning Update

This week was a busy one!

First of all congratulations to grade 3/4 students for an excellent performance in the Remembrance Day Assembly.  Our classes set the appropriate tone and were an attentive audience.  Well Done!

We completed the good copy of our Olympic letters to Mayor Nenshi after using a letter template to organize our thoughts.  Students thought of three reasons for or against hosting the Olympics, as well as counter arguments to their position.  The vote for Calgarians takes place on Tuesday November 13th!

In Science we began comparing different rock samples.  We looked at similarities and differences and learned about Mohs scale of hardness.

Should Calgary Host the 2026 Olympics?

We are working on persuasive letter writing this week by exploring the question "Should Calgary Host the 2026 Olympics?"

Ask me what side of the debate I am on and the three good reasons for my position!
