Learning Updates

We are putting the finishing touches on our Celebration of Learning. We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday December 19th at 3 pm to share all that we have prepared!

In Language Arts we have been writing about our best memories of 2018.  First we wrote a draft copy in our writing journals, then edited and created a good copy to share during interviews.  In Social Studies we are finishing up our comparison of the land and the people of the Calgary area from the past to the present.

Last week we had a blast doing Alien Inline. Each day we reflected on our progress and set goals for the following session. Watch for the video and slide show during our assembly. In French we completed our floor plans and uploaded the results to IRIS so that students can log on and share at home.

Book Fair Info

December 2018

Dear Parents and Families,

Another Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school from December 17-21, 2018. We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Your support helps us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.

You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Visit the Scholastic Book Fairs website at www.scholastic.ca/bookfairs to read reviews of the Featured Books. You can also watch book trailers and author videos with your child on the BookTube page.

A Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair will be going home. The flyer also contains a special Family Draw ballot that students can deposit during their classroom preview visit. You could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s classroom! The draw will be made Thursday afternoon, December 20, 2018 at 1:00 pm.

Please do NOT send money to school with your child.  Purchases can only be made Thursday, Dec 20 from 4:30-7:45 pm and Friday, Dec 21 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates on your calendar! We thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary event. Thank you for believing in books and the impact of reading on your child’s future.

Sincerely,

Mrs. D. Strome

Learning Updates

We are hard at work preparing for our learning assembly on Wednesday December 19th at 3pm!

In Social Studies, students are making a comparison between life in Alberta in 1718 and 2018, with an emphasis on food, clothing, shelter, people, and the natural area.

In Math we are exploring arrays to help our understanding of multiplication.  Below is a copy of the assessment that students are using for these assignments to follow each step.

Social Studies – Historical Artwork

Learning Intention: I can use my knowledge of Alberta’s history to compare what life was like 300 years ago to today with words and pictures.

Task: Draw and label a scene on one side of your paper that represents the lifestyle of the Niitsitapi people in 1718.  On the other side draw and label a scene that represents your life in Calgary today.

Assessment: Use this checklist to assess your work

I showed the clothing, food, tools, and shelter of the Niitsitapi in the past    ___________

I wrote about the materials that were used in the past, including the buffalo  ____________

I drew examples of the clothing, food, tools, and shelter I use today      ____________

I made connections between what has changed and what is the same      ____________

Multiplication using Arrays

Learning Intention: I can use an array to show multiplication facts

Draw each array in your book followed by a matching multiplication sentence.

Assessment: Use this checklist to assess your work

I used blocks to create arrays for my first number                              ____________

I drew the arrays in my math book                                                      ____________

I wrote a multiplication sentence for each array                                  ____________

I challenged myself with a larger number and
