Thanks to those students who wore Orange in recognition of Orange Shirt Day!!

We watched a video about Orange Shirt Day, and viewed a book titled "When I Was 8..."

Our day

Terry Fox Run TOMORROW at 10 to 10:15! Please wear runners and bring a water bottle. Prepare to run!!! Reminder if you want to contribute to Coins for Terry, please bring that tomorrow.

Please ask me about Orange Shirt day! It is this Friday. You do not have to purchase a shirt or anything orange if you don't have it.

And....Ms. Han is now full time till the end of the year! Yahoo!!!

We worked on our good/bad/neutral characters today. We are super excited about our creations.


Today in Math, Mr. Koch's class learned how to play Place Value Yahtzee.  Here is an example of 2 score cards.  Ask me to beat you at this game tonight.

Tomorrow will be our Terry Fox Run.  We will be running/walking between 10:00 and 10:15.  The map is on an earlier post.  Here is the video of Terry Fox that we watched in class today.

We looked at what Fractured Fairy Tales are.  We discussed stories told from the perspectives of other characters.  Ask me how this story differs from the Three Little Pigs.

Math to do! Etc.


Today, Room 5 did a “How Many Ways” Question for the target number 25. This means that students experimented with balanced equations that give a total of 25. As well, students are beginning to challenge themselves to make more interesting equations with multiple terms, operations etc. 

One example equation could be:

100 – 25 – 25 – 25 = 17 + 8

As we explore equations we will learn more ways to do this – we don’t know them all yet! See the photo for some examples we have started with. 

For homework tonight, 

  1. Make any corrections Mr. Whitton asked you to check, 
  2. USING PEN, ADD ONE NEW CHALLENGING EQUATION
  3. Share the work with a parent and have them initial it to show they have seen it

Terry Fox Run 2017!

We will be collecting Coins for Terry.
  • Grades 5&6 students will be collecting every morning this week. (September 25th, 26th, 27th) 
  • This is by donation. Please do not feel pressured to bring money. Any amount is fine.

Fairy Tales

Grade 3/4 have been working with Fairy Tales this week.  We explored the elements that make up a Fairy Tale.  Ask me about the specific elements.  We have also read a number of Fairy Tales from past and present, and have looked for similarities and differences between them.

This week, we learned the pronunciation of the French alphabet, and learned how to ask and respond to the question "How are you?"

Grade 3 - SLA Notice Came Home Today

Today we read chapter 2 of our read aloud book " How to Beat The Bully Without Really Trying."
Ask me who the main characters are and have me describe a personality trait for each of them.

We created some brain art to share at our upcoming conferences.  We will not display any art, instead we are challenging parents to identify their student's art based on what they have included in their pictures.

Today is Thorncliffe School's first early dismissal.  Teachers are looking forward to working on our school goals and school development plan.

Meet the teacher night and BBQ!

What a great opportunity to eat some good food and meet parents! Thanks for supporting the school. Can't wait to share our learning journey with you all. 
Reminder: A notice has gone out or will be coming home with your child today and tomorrow. Please make sure you read and fill out all necessary information and return all forms as soon as you can.

  • Consent for CBE use of Student information
  • Consent for Use of Student Information by News Media and Outside groups
  • School Fees
  • K-6 Noon Supervision Form
Also, tomorrow (Friday, September 8th) is early dismissal. Please send the usual snack and lunch as they will be here for lunch and dismissed at 1:25 pm. Please make sure you have made arrangements for this new change in time.
Today we learned a little about developing a growth mindset.  We learned a big word today; Neuroplasticity.  Ask me what this means.

Thursday evening is our Meet The Teacher evening.  The classroom meeting times for grade 3/4 are between 6:30 - 7:00 pm.  We look forward to meeting all our student families!

Today we welcomed several new students to Thorncliffe School, as well as all returning students.  We are excited for the upcoming school year.

Important Notice

School Council is hosting an M&M BBQ Fundraiser on this evening.  A portion of the proceeds from this event will be used to help send grade 5 and 6 students to outdoor school.  A notice explaining times and costs was sent home with all students today.
