Multiplication Table

On Thursday, we will have a quiz on basic multiplication facts up to 5 x 5.

We have also worked on creating a art piece using our knowledge of arrays.
Here are some examples of some student work.

Today we tried writing paragraphs about our weekend.  Remember that each paragraph has a topic sentence and 3-4 supporting details about the topic sentence.
Here are some additional supports that will help.

Thank-you to Devin for MC'ing our event tomorrow.  Thanks to Alex for putting together the iMovie, Kent, Alice and Alexa for taking on a speaking role.  Your hard work is appreciated.

Today we started looking at multiplication.  We read "Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream - A Mathematical Story" by Cindy Neuschwander.  Ask me the lesson Amanda learned in the story.

Here is a link for some additional multiplication resources.  Please refer to them as often as you need.

Today we composed paragraphs using a hamburger planning sheet.  The hamburger planner is organized as follows:
Top Bun: Topic sentence
Lettuce : First supporting detail
Tomato: Second supporting detail
Cheese : Third supporting detail
Meat : The last and most important detail
Bottom Bun : Concluding sentence

Here is another logic puzzle to work through -

In Language Arts we looked at how to organize our writing in paragraphs.  We will be producing paragraphs with topic sentences to begin, adding 3-4 supporting sentences that are about the topic sentences, and ending them with a concluding sentence.

Here is some additional practice to identify topic sentences, and organize supporting sentences.

We began our rehearsals for our sharing assembly that will take place this Friday morning.  The assembly will begin at 10:50am after recess.  Please join us as we share our learning from our current Science and French units.

In Language Arts, we learned to create complex sentences.  Here is a video that does a really good job explaining how to join independent and dependent clauses to create complex sentences.

Here are some additional exercises to work on tonight.

We spent the bulk of today researching more about how homemade instruments are designed and how they work.  We were able to incorporate some of our ideas this afternoon, when we had an additional instrument building lesson.

In math, we worked on solving a logic puzzle involving problem solving and addition.  We discussed strategies that could be successful in organizing information.  We used given information and inferencing to fill in the table and solve the problem.  Work with me this weekend to solve the following:

**Important Notice Came Home Today**
Information about the Accountability Pillar Survey came home.  Please read the information and complete the survey.

Today in Language we worked on adding conjunctions to independent clauses to make compound sentences.
Here is the homework to be completed for tomorrow

We also learned a new logic game called Achi.  Ask me to play.

***REMINDER*** - SUBTRACTION TEST IS TOMORROW AFTERNOON!!!

We finished our letters today in Language Arts.
We researched some new vocabulary from our read aloud.  Ask me what phenomenon and snippet means.
We begun constructing our musical instruments this afternoon.  We will continue to accept any extra of the following if you have any around the house:

-pipe cleaner
-paper towel tubes
-elastics
-plastic tubs like margarine / yogurt containers

We completed another mad minute in math.  Today we had to identify whether the question was asking us to add or subtract.

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Most of us finished our letters today.  We had the opportunity to type them up.  Many of us looked up a school somewhere in Canada to send it to.  Hope we hear back soon!

In science we explored the differences and similarities of humans and animals hearing abilities.  There is a shared document on Google Drive that you can access at home.

Today in Language Arts we continued to work on using capital letters in our writing.  We use capital letters to:
- Names ( people, pets, places, stores, restaurants, day of the week, months)
- To begin a new sentence
- The opening and closing of a letter

In math we continued working on subtraction.  Our test will be Thursday afternoon.  Our test will include:
-single digit subtraction
-multi-digit without regrouping
-multi-digit with regrouping
-subtraction with zero's
-subtraction math talk (minuend / subtrahend / difference)
-estimating differences.
Here is a video explaining subtraction with zero's

We also learned a subtraction game.  Ask me to show you how to play.

Friday, January 13, 2017

Today we learned how to craft a letter.  We learned there are 5 components to a letter.  We received a letter from a student from Bowcroft School asking us to participate in a mail race.  We composed a letter that we can send to any school of our choosing in Canada.  Stay tuned to see how many responses we get and from how far away!

We continued to work on subtracting with regrouping.  I have attached a couple links to some addition and subtraction games on Mathplayground.com.

We completed a mad minute on basic addition facts.  We timed ourselves to see how long it took to complete 50 questions.  We all completed 50 questions with outstanding accuracy.  Please continue to practice your basic math facts to see if I can recall them even quicker next time!

Today in language arts we worked on writing a paragraph about a topic without saying what that topic is.  We left it up to the reader to use their inferencing skills.  This is an important skill to help us connect with text.  It allows us to bring our personal experience into our reading.

In French we learned some polite words and phrases.  Ask me how to say "please, thank-you, excuse me and you're welcome" in French.

We viewed a number of videos about home made instruments.  We brainstormed some ideas about how we can create our own.  Any materials lying around the house or garage you would be able to donate would be greatly appreciated.

We will have a test on subtracting multi-digit numbers involving regrouping next week!!  Please review your basic addition and subtraction facts!!

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

Today in Language, we continued to demonstrate our comprehension of the novel "Matilda."  We had to use our inferencing skills to answer questions we had about the text.  Ask me how I know that the distance between Ms. Honey's cottage and the school is not that great.  I also had to recall the different feelings Matilda was experiencing when she experienced her miracles.

In French we learned various sentences about how to say, "Can I......"  Ask me how to say, Can I go to the bathroom? and Can I go to the library in French?

We reviewed estimation and rounding in math.  We learned how we can use these skills to see if answers to our addition and subtraction equations are accurate.  We will continue to work on both addition and subtraction with regrouping.  Please review your basic addition and subtraction facts nightly.

We will be creating both percussion and wind instruments in science.  We will need various items from home to build our projects.  If you have any extra of the following, we would appreciate if you could send any with your students.
-boxes
-cardboard
-elastics
-string
-paper towel tubes
-spoons
-empty yogurt containers
-empty and clean plastic bottles
-straws

Thanks for your support with these items.  The instruments the students create need to make sound, change pitch and volume.

Monday, January 9, 2017

Today in French, we continued to work on our scripts titled "Comment Ca-va?"
We will be recording ourselves speaking French about how we are feeling.

In Math we continued with subtraction.  We specifically looked at re-grouping.  Ask me to illustrate how to solve 43-27= using base 10.

Bring in your answer for the following challenge tomorrow!

Thursday, January 5, 2017

Today we spent the bulk of the day on an art project that connects with our Hearing and Sound unit in Science.

We looked at abstract art by Vassily Kandinsky.  We learned he incorporated music into his art.  He considered his work compositions rather than art.  Through our abstract art, we attempted to answer the question, What Does Sound Look Like??

We chose a sound to visually represent in our art using three mediums:  paper, paint and pastel.  Here are some pictures of our work in progress.

Happy New Year!!  Welcome Back

In language arts we created a piece of writing about our winter break.  We used proper sentences and punctuation in our writing.  We also needed to include authors voice and descriptive language from our "triple scoop word list."

We had open library today.  If you have overdue books, please return them as soon as possible.

We read the chapter "The Weekly Test" in our read aloud novel.  Ask me to summarize what happened in the chapter.

We began to explore how addition and subtraction are related.  We worked on creating fact families to help us memorize our basic addition and subtraction facts.  Here are some additional practice activities.

Today we talked about Alberta's special places. Some of these places are protected by the UNESCO world heritage organization. We talked ...
