Weekly Update

We had a very busy week!

Sunday September 30th is Orange Shirt Day.  We will be observing on Monday.  Here is more information about Orange Shirt Day- http://www.orangeshirtday.org/

Remember to wear an Orange shirt on Monday!

Board game club forms went home today- please sign and return if you are interested!

This week we learned about words with "ea" in them, how to tell time on a clock, how to read maps, and our dandelion seeds have started to grow!!

This weekend parents can help support our learning by-

- looking for "ea" words, like each, area, and beautiful!
- asking to tell time on a clock or what time it will be in one hour, five hours, etc.
- searching for interesting maps to share with the class

Also they cut down the tree in front of our class!!!
(don't worry, we kept some : )

Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 3 Students:

Important Information: Grade 3 Student Learning Assessment

After three years of piloting the Grade 3 Student Learning Assessment (SLA), in June of 2017 Alberta Education announced that Grade 3 SLA to support student learning will be available to teachers as a tool to use at their discretion.  I have decided to use this tool with my Grade 3 class this year.

The SLAs have four possible components:
§  Literacy
§  Assessments completed on a computer
§  Written performance tasks
§  Numeracy
§  Assessments completed on a computer
§  Written performance tasks

The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. SLAs are one of many formative assessment tools.  They give teachers valuable information about each student’s learning which in turns helps them to address individual student learning needs throughout the year. You may access a report of your child’s results through me. Interpretation of results is best accomplished through conversation between the parent/guardian, student and teacher. I will share the assessments with you during Parent-Teacher Conferences.

This year, teachers may administer and re-administer SLA components at any time until the end of June 2019.  I have set aside September 11 - 19 for students to complete the assessments.

For answers to commonly asked questions about SLAs, visit the Alberta Education SLA website athttps://education.alberta.ca/department/ipr/slas/ for more information.  Attached to this letter is Alberta Education’s Grade 3 SLA Quick Facts for Parents/Guardians for your information.  To become familiar with the types and interactivity of the questions completed on a computer in the Grade 3 SLA, students can try out the practice questions publicly available in the SLA Application.  Released questions from previous years are also available in the SLA Application, will allow students to become familiarized with examples of content and question types.

You are welcome to contact me at any time to discuss your child’s learning.

Sincerely,

Desiree Patkau
Grade 3/4 Teacher

Greetings from Room 1

Hello parents and guardians,

This year Room 1 will have a separate blog. However, there are currently some technical difficulties getting that up and running so in the meantime I will be posting updates here. The new blog should be up and running by next Monday. I will keep you informed.

My name is Desiree Patkau and I am excited to be teaching gr 3/4 in Room 1 for 2018-19. I was lucky enough to spend several months at Thorncliffe last school year where I got the chance to meet many of this year’s 3/4 class. I am excited to watch all my new friends grow and learn together this year.

I will be updating the blog on Mondays and Wednesdays, with information on what we are learning in the classroom and events happening at Thorncliffe School.

Please be aware that the feature notifying individuals when the blog is updated is not always reliable, nor is it instantaneous.

I am have sent home a blue Consent for Use of Student Information form. Please review, sign and return the form if you have not already done so.

Should you need to contact me I can be reached by emailing depatkau@cbe.ab.ca.
